Good reliable storage : Western Digital 2 TB SATA II 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Retail Kit - WDBAAZ0020HNC-NRS
In linux (ubuntu 11.04), this drive parks it's heads every 30 seconds or so(according to my tests with smartctl).
This means it would reach 300,000 load cycles within a few months (it's lifetime maximum load cycle count). Apparently the problem effects linux more than windows because, allegedly, linux accesses the drive every few seconds waking up the drive. (According to:

Data lifetime is the most important feature I look for a hard drive, so I gave this one a "2".
I strongly suspect that the problem also occurs on a Mac (but I don't have I mac I can use to test it). Similar problems have effected Mac users in the past with older WD drives. I would stay away from this drive if you are not using windows.
Although I have not tried contacting Western Digital, many people have complained that Western Digital tech support is ignorant of the problem and will not help, which is discouraging.
This problem has been around for a while, and does not only effect WD drives.

To be fair, not all Western Digital Caviar drives have this problem. I have a 1TB WD green drive purchased a 18 months ago which works great (and has a low load cycle count).

This feature causing the trouble is called "intellipark", and it can not be disabled. (At least, not officially. Western Digital released a program named "widdle3.exe" for dos allows users to disable intellipark. I have not tried it yet, and do not know if it works on these modern drives. If it does work, I'll come back and up the score. At the moment, I'm quite disappointed.)

There are many reasons to get the internal Western Digital Wd5000Ksrtl Caviar 500Gb Sata. The first is that for cheaper you get more Gb for your money. Drives half the cost of this model supply much less than 50% of the storehouse space. Some might say that the 500Gb is experimental and to go with a solid 200Mb drive, but the 500Gb stability has shown failure rates no more or less than those models. To top it off Wd have undoubtedly taken the drive shop by storm. I once owned an array of Seagates (and still do and am happy with my 200Gb drives). The Seagate Barracuda has all the time been a dependable favourite, but Western Digital Caviar Sata should be given a test drive.
The whole point is that hardware compatibility standards have undoubtedly made that overnight leap. Many users will be seeing to the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor about this time. In turn this means seeking out a motherboard like the Intel Dp35Dp or one designed for Core 2 Quad chips. When you engage these mobos you will be hit with new standards. So essentially what we are seeing at here is not just getting a new hard drive but probably a new Pc. For those who already run Sata then they get a gigantic storehouse gadget to add to their system. For those who are wondering what to do with a new Pc the key is to eliminate Ide and go with a Sata system. This also means getting a Sata Dvd-Rw while you are at it. It will be Sata all the way.
Those who want to concentrate Ide drives and Sata are in for headaches unless they have experience. Other inherent horror is that Xp installations won't identify Sata drives without a driver that is ordinarily installed via 3.5" floppy... And yeah, these aren't supported by some Intel Core 2 Quad mobos. Vista handles it no question so you can see where this is all going. These are the kind of forces at play. So when you look at a drive like this you need to see a much bigger photo that is the Vista, Sata, Core 2 Quad direction. Either that or you need some palpate with Sata/Ide hybrid setups.

Next level of hard drive size- 3Tb Hitachi 64Mb cache 7200 rpm Sata Iii : Hitachi Deskstar 3.5 Inch 1 TB 7200 RPM SATA II 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02860
Years ago I started using Ibm's line of hard disks to cut failure rates. I have Ibm drives with 1/2 million spinning hours logged and no failures in a new low level reformat to build a 20Tb Nas Raid. Hitachi for a while was producing the Ibm drives and ultimately bought out that group of Ibm, but kept the potential in the product.
In the same load of that raid-5 ideas Synology 5-Bay Plug-n-Use Expansion Unit to Ds1010+ and Ds710+ Network Attached storehouse Dx510 (Black) the old Ibm drives were loaded side by side with two new Wd 2.0 Gb drives and the whole 5 drive ideas was given a low level format. In the logfile, the two Wd drives had multiple (>100) read errors and a few (>30) bad sectors while the antique Ibm discs had zero failures. In the main box I had bought some of these Hitachi units and found they also did a low level format with zero errors.
While I don't want to fancy on why Ibm left the diskdrive business, their legacy of reliability, speed, and capacity has proven their whole value in preserving data for years without problems. Today I insist on using hitachi's Ibm legacy mechanism in new computers or raid storehouse arrays because out of 40+ Ibm style drives in use both in on/off environments and constant spinning environments, none have failed.
There are free tools on the internet that will let you read your drive's "log" of errors - I extremely propose not only the hitachi disk systems but this software for reading the s.m.a.r.t. Memory in the drives you have to predict time to come reliability or failures. While all mechanical devices finally die, retention track of subtle failure hints is important.

I bought this external case for my Mac-Mini to use and share a 1Tb hard drive with the rest of my macs for Time motor over the network. It basically works like a Time Capsule. *The one complaint, ad the reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5, is that the power button on the front is a very cheap part. It gets slightly stuck and rocks to one side when I press it*. Luckily I only turn it off once in a great while when I go on trips and shut down everything.
It has an auto-sleep function where it will spin down the drive when not in use (even when not related to the computer). The file change speeds are very fast over the eSata port and the firewire does nicely for Sd video editing on the mac-mini.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants a Mac Pro seeing external enclosure. Install is fairly straightforward and the aluminum case keeps the drive cool by dissipating the heat (I only have a 7200Rpm drive in there though).
